Licensing of Energy Storage Systems (ESS)

Energy storage systems (ESS) have been identified as the key technology required to stabilise the grid and enable Barbados to continue its renewable energy transition.

Accordingly, the Government of Barbados, through the Ministry of Energy and Business (MEB), advises that the online portal for the licensing of Energy Storage Systems (ESS) is now open.

Energy Storage Tariff (EST) Applications

As such, individuals and entities may now apply for a licence to provide energy storage services under the Energy Storage Tariff (EST) for systems up to 1 MW in capacity.

A total of 50 MW is available under the EST.

Electricity Supply Act, 2024

The public is invited to note that the Electricity Supply Act, 2024-26 was proclaimed on March 1st, 2025. The Electricity Supply Act has also come into effect along with the Electric Light and Power (Fees) Regulations.

This new legislation regulates and establishes licensing frameworks for the generation, storage, transmission, distribution, dispatch, supply and sale of electricity by independent power producers.

Right To

You can only use this registration to request a cumulative total of 10kW(AC) of renewable energy for any one household. This is NOT to be used for non-domestic systems.

To apply for more than 10kW(AC) domestic please use the ESA portal.
